With Scott working this weekend I pretty much boycotted the idea of a Mother's Day this year... to me it would be just as nice if we all pretended this day was just like any other. I truly feel (without the slightest hint of sarcasm, and I'm serious about this one) that I'm not a good mom. I often times have these sort of out-of-body experiences where I can see all these mistakes I'm making and all these things I should be doing better, and yet I feel so helpless when it comes to mothering. But then, today happened. For the most part it really was like any other Sunday... get up, shower, get kids bathed, "make" breakfast (frozen waffles count, right?) and then try my absolute hardest to get all 4 of us to church on-time. Normally I wouldn't have attempted church today because Brody wasn't feeling well and I dread the whole Mother's day candy bar routine at the end. But today was sweet because Samantha and the rest of the little kids sang in church - it is always one of my favorites to see her sing with the primary kids. As part of the Mother's Day tradition the sunday school teachers ask the little kids innocent questions and then put together a little book with all of their wild, crazy and off the wall answers - kids really do say the darnedest things.
I got a HUGE kick out of Samantha's responses...
Q: What have you leaned from your mom?
Sam: how to do chores
--> Now if there is only one thing in this world I have taught her and its how to do chores then I can die a happy mom! Seriously great answer!
Q: How old is your mom?
Sam: 31
--> Unfortunately she is correct. She asks us all the time how old we are so it's not surprising that she actually got this one right. In another kids response he answered 64 and I'm pretty sure his mom is a few years younger then me... too, funny!
Q: What is you mom's favorite thing to do?
Sam: Work on the computer and take pictures.
--> She knows me so well...
Q: What is your favorite thing about your mom?
Sam: She has pretty hair.
--> She thinks my hair is pretty!! How cute is that??!!
Q: If your mom could go anywhere in the world where would it be?
Sam: Go somewhere green so she could take pictures.
--> Man, I love that girl; she is so smart and her answer could not be more right!
Q: What is your mom's favorite thing to say?
Sam: No
--> Yeah, I know, I do say that a lot.
Q: What is your favorite thing to do for your mom?
Sam: Go shopping with her.
--> Yeah, except it's like pulling teeth to get her to go with me.
Q: If you could buy something for your mom, what would it be?
Sam: A pretty necklace or ring.
--> Awesome, now go tell Dad that!!
Q: How does your mom make you feel special?
Sam: Let's me play on the computer when I do more chores.
And the best answer of all time...
Q: If your mom could have one wish, what would it be?
Sam: To be the best mom anyone could ever have!
--> Begin ugly sobbing cry!
After reading the last answer she had given I immediately broke down and began my ugly sobbing cry. I realized for the first time that she feels and sees what I'm TRYING to accomplish here with this whole mother-thing. She's not judging me for the poor job I'm doing, she's grateful for the effort I am putting forth to do a better job. And in that moment I fell in love with Mother's Day. I don't want it to be a doom and gloom day in my house; I want my kids to see that I'm trying - everyday - to be a better mother to them.
And because no post is complete without a picture... Happy Mother's Day!
